Supercharacters, Exponential Sums, and the Uncertainty Principle

چکیده
The theory of supercharacters, which generalizes classical character theory, was recently introduced by P. Diaconis and I.M. Isaacs, building upon earlier work of C. André. We study supercharacter theories on (Z/nZ)d induced by the actions of certain matrix groups, demonstrating that a variety of exponential sums of interest in number theory (e.g., Gauss, Ramanujan, and Kloosterman sums) arise in this manner. We develop a generalization of the discrete Fourier transform, in which supercharacters play the role of the Fourier exponential basis. We provide a corresponding uncertainty principle and compute the associated constants in several cases.

Large Deviations for Partial Sums U-processes in Dependent Cases
The large deviation principle (LDP) is known to hold for partial sums U{processes of real-valued kernel functions of i.i.d. random variables X i. We prove an LDP when the X i are independent but not identically distributed or fullll some Markov dependence or mixing conditions. Moreover we give a general condition which suuces for the LDP to carry over from the partial sums empirical processes L...
متن کاملThe Graphic Nature of the Symmetric Group
We investigate a remarkable class of exponential sums which are derived from the symmetric groups and which display a diverse array of visually appealing features. Our interest in these expressions stems not only from their astounding visual properties, but also from the fact that they represent a novel and intriguing class of supercharacters.
متن کاملRamanujan Sums as Supercharacters
The theory of supercharacters, recently developed by DiaconisIsaacs and André, can be used to derive the fundamental algebraic properties of Ramanujan sums. This machinery frequently yields one-line proofs of difficult identities and provides many novel formulas. In addition to exhibiting a new application of supercharacter theory, this article also serves as a blueprint for future work since s...
متن کاملThe Graphic Nature of Gaussian Periods
Abstract. Recent work has shown that the study of supercharacters on abelian groups provides a natural framework within which to study certain exponential sums of interest in number theory. Our aim here is to initiate the study of Gaussian periods from this novel perspective. Among other things, our approach reveals that these classical objects display dazzling visual patterns of great complexi...
متن کاملInvariance principle for stochastic processes with short memory
Abstract: In this paper we give simple sufficient conditions for linear type processes with short memory that imply the invariance principle. Various examples including projective criterion are considered as applications. In particular, we treat the weak invariance principle for partial sums of linear processes with short memory. We prove that whenever the partial sums of innovations satisfy th...
